Trying to bring marijuana on a plane may seem like an attractive option for travelers seeking to get around restrictions in their home states, but flying with pot is actually illegal and can result in serious legal consequences. Marijuana remains illegal under federal law and traveling with it is not allowed no matter the circumstances.

At airports across the United States, security officers are equipped with drug-sniffing dogs to detect illicit substances. If they find marijuana, it will be confiscated and travelers could be subject to fines or more serious legal penalties. In addition, cannabis products can be stored in amnesty boxes some airports provide, meaning travelers must either surrender them or take them back to their vehicles.

When it comes to flying high, airlines’ contracts of carriage state that intoxicated passengers can’t fly. Airlines may deny boarding to passengers who appear under the influence of drugs or appear disorderly. Luckily, a marijuana high typically doesn’t constitute intoxicated or unruly behavior.
