Utah Voters Show Narrow Support for Recreational Marijuana Legalization

04/24/2026

Utah voters are showing increased openness to the idea of recreational marijuana legalization. Recent polling finds that 52% of likely voters in the state would support a measure to legalize marijuana for adult use if an election were held today. 43% would oppose the proposal, while 55% remain undecided. The survey had a margin of error of 4%.

Support for recreational marijuana stands out as particularly strong among younger voters. Those under the age of 40 register the highest levels of favorability toward legalization efforts. This generational divide points to evolving attitudes in a state that has traditionally maintained conservative positions on substance policy.

The survey was sponsored by an organization dedicated to medical cannabis issues. Keep Utah Medical has advocated for strengthening the existing medical marijuana framework instead of immediately advancing recreational sales. Leaders within the group emphasize the value of keeping programs focused on patient needs. They call for practical expansions, such as allowing telemedicine options for medical card approvals and adding sleep disturbances to the list of qualifying conditions.

Even with the narrow majority shown in the poll, opinions across Utah remain split. Groups opposed to broader legalization contend that such a measure would face stronger resistance at the ballot box. They highlight ongoing concerns related to public health, potential youth access, and broader community impacts.

Medical marijuana has operated in Utah for several years after initial voter approval. The program allows regulated access for patients with specific qualifying conditions, yet keeps recreational use strictly prohibited under state law. Many residents value the medical option while approaching wider availability with caution.

The poll results reflect growing momentum around marijuana policy discussions. As younger demographics express more support, both lawmakers and community leaders continue to track shifting public views. Any push toward recreational legalization would need to weigh potential economic gains and reduced enforcement costs against worries about increased usage and related social challenges.
